So, there’s a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming out on August 8, 2014, and that got us to thinking about how TMNT has been part of our lives ever since two guys in 1984 had a brainstorming session and made each other laugh. In the first TMNT comic, the quartet is created the same way as Daredevil (TMNT was spoofing many comics popular at the time): getting hit with a canister of radioactive ooze. The four turtles mutated into four teenagers and, under the tutelage of Splinter, learned the skills of the ninja and found their signature weapons. A bunch of smart/lucrative marketing and merchandising deals later, and the cartoon and toy line were born. With that cartoon and the toys, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cemented places in the hearts of children of the 80s forever.
